After the humiliating defeat against the arch rivals, Pakistan, in Champion’s Trophy, most of the cricket fans in India were heartbroken. Fortunately, for some die-hard cricket fans like us, who sternly believes that Cricket is no less than religion, Women’s World Cup Cricket started on 24th Jun 2017.

The Indian Women’s Cricket team already has star players like Mithali Raj & Jhulan Goswami, but the player who is making highlights & for whom the opponents are making game plans is none other than the new batting sensation of the team, Smriti Mandhana.

Hailing from a small town of Maharashtra, Sangli, this lady came into limelight when she became the first Indian women to score a double-hundred in a One Day match. The match was played between Maharashtra & Gujrat as part of West-Zone U-19 tournament, in October 2013. Smriti played a scintillating knock of 224 runs in just 150 balls.

Smriti’s cricketing career was obvious, as Cricket was already in her family. Her father & brother, both used to Play at district level, for Sangli, but the moment of inspiration for her, to pick cricket as a career, came only when she watched her brother playing for Maharashtra U16s tournament.

Cricket was a complete family activity for Smriti. Her father used to take care of her schedules whereas her mother used to take care of her diet and other aspects. His brother used to be & still is, her net bowler.

Soon this talented girl was able to make it to the Maharashtra U-15 team, when she was still 9yrs. As talent does not need any other recognition & it speaks for itself, that’s what happened with Smriti as well. Couple of years later, she was selected for Maharashtra U-19s team.

Smriti made her International debut in August 2014, in a test match against England, where her score of 22 & 51, with an opening partnership of 76 runs chasing 182 in second Innings, helped the team to win the match. She scored her maiden ODI hundred in 2016, when India was touring Australia. In the second ODI of the tour, she scored 102 runs of 109 balls, but unfortunately the team was not able to win the match.

She had a small break in her career due to the injuries she sustained during the Women’s Big Bash League, in Australia, in Jan 2017. Due to the injury, she missed World Cup Qualifier & a Quadrangular Series in South Africa, but she made a super comeback in the World Cup, with scores of 90 against England & 106 against West Indies. Amazed by her knock against West Indies, one enthusiastic cricket fan tweeted the following, tagging the explosive opening batting sensation of last decade, Virendra Sehwag.

The response from the legend himself is enough to boost anyone’s confidence, he replied. We, the passionate cricket fans of Indian Cricket Team, truly hope that the talent will not be lost in the limelight & will be itched in the Indian Women’s Cricket history forever.
